Top Skills:
  • The most important skill set is Linux subject matter expertise, the candidate needs to be able to leverage command lines and shell scripting on a Linux Platform.
  • The Engineer needs to have work experience with Hadoop, Puppet and preferably Docker Containers for run-time and automation.
  • Relevant work experience with VMware, Solaris, and Active Directory to support the existing systems and provide expertise when necessary, being able to provide best practices in various scenarios will be important.
  • Having a leadership mentality and being able to provide strategic oversight as the Linux SME to a heavily Unix structured team will set this candidate apart from the rest.

Job Description:
  • The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for upgrading, maintaining, and administering the Linux, VMware, Solaris and Windows servers.
  • This organization is looking for a technical Linux Engineer to bring relevant knowledge and best practices to assist in various migrations, upgrades, and maintenance at the server level.
  • Maintain security posture of server infrastructure in accordance with internal policies, standards and procedures for security patching and compliance.
  • Perform periodic audit and security related tasks designed to ensure role based access to server environment and domain.
  • Scripting: Unix/Linux shell command scripts, Windows command interpreter and PowerShell scripts for deployment, management, security and reporting.
Additional Information:
Some of the key projects include the below:
  • Server Migrations and Active Directory maintenance
  • Big Data and Red Hat Linux Implementation
  • Middle-ware migration from IBM Product to JBOSS
  • Automation of several processes and procedures with Puppet and Docker
Preferred Certifications:
  • Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Linux+, such as CompTIA Linux+, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) preferred, or relevant experience.
Work Environment:
  • The current team is around 10 total engineers between server and cloud. We are heavy on the Windows and Solaris side and need to diversify with a Linux SME to join the organization.
  • With a push for Big Data we are in need of the open source capabilities of Linux.
  • The current environment is a Hybrid on premise and cloud based platform with Azure and our Data Center.
Interview Information:
  • Phone Screen with one of the other Lead Engineers and Server and Storage Manager, then an onsite interview with the Server Engineering team and the CTO.
Business Challenge:
  • The current team is leveraging a soon to be obsolete Unix platform and most of the engineer's skill sets are Unix, with the push to leverage Big Data Analytics and the move to JBOSS there is an increasing demand in this team for a Linux SME to assist in the automation of processes and increased efficiency.
