Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a driven and innovative Principal Scientist / Senior Principal Scientist to join our Immune-modulation and Biotherapeutics Discovery department located at our Ridgefield, CT facility. As a Principal Scientist, you will provide high quality technical and scientific expertise in the area of Antibody Engineering, bispecifics and protein therapeutic modalities. The ideal expertise for this position will be integrating biochemistry, structure biology, phage display and other engineering technology to create optimal lead and tool molecules for understanding target biology. There will be opportunity to propose and develop new technology initiatives and / or novel drug concepts. The candidate will manage complex projects and act as an internal consultant to programs primarily involving areas of Immune Modulation. Will be expected to initiate and publish research findings to internal and external scientific community.   • Functions as a project leader for Skill center activities and understands both the NBE process and project-specific biology sufficient to optimize Biotherapeutics Discovery contributions.The individual will have had a significant track record of high level impact on a clinical or technology portfolio
  • Demonstrates clear understanding of research team goals and works effectively toward achieving them; Has ability to participate as co-leader or representative on multiple project teams and contribute to defining expertise-related aspects of overall program goals.
  • Identify and implement strategies to generate and optimize antibodies and multi-specific molecules.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary groups, including CRO?s, recombinant antibody discovery, lead engineering, protein characterization, protein expression and with disease-related matrix teams to ensure optimal lead selection.
  • Establish an international reputation in area of expertise; represent BIPI as a scientific leader in field of expertise at both internal and national/international conferences, meetings and organizations.

  • Prepares clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations. Independently communicates results in the form of reports and or presentations; Presents responsibly and defends own work at scientific meetings; May deliver project updates to senior level management.
  • Keeps abreast of relevant literature and serves as resource in area of specialized expertise; Develops and maintains outside visibility.
  • Assumes responsibility for direct reports as needed including recruiting and managing; Mentors and develops scientific staff; Directs and oversees experimental design and results of technicians and junior level scientists.
  • Complies with all applicable regulations; Ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies.
  • Contributes to departmental administration; Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel.
Candidate will be hired at level commensurate with experience

Requirements for Senior Principal Scientist\:
  • Requires a PhD degree plus seven (7) years related industry experience or equivalent in addition to experience in lab management.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years? experience leading employees, projects and leaders is required.
  • Requires an advanced knowledge of a technology employed in the skill center such as protein engineering, lead generation and associated immunology, protein expression and purification, analytical biophysics of proteins, advanced mass spectrometry.
  • Requires supervision and mentoring of junior staff within that technology. Requires project management ability and excellent written and oral presentation skills
Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities\:
  • Needs experience in one or more of the skills listed above, along with knowledge of the skill center process and the ability to apply those skills to the process. Requires international travel and collaboration
