Reporting to the Director, Research & Development and located at the corporate headquarters in Wilton, CT, the Senior Scientist, Research & Development ? Dry Products will be responsible for the execution of dry products, formula design projects, as well as ensuring that all nutritional and performance requirements are achieved. This includes all new dry product formula design, formula renovation/ optimization, and continuous improvement projects, as well as enhancing the palatability of all existing products and forms. This also includes establishing and maintaining specifications for all finished dry products and raw ingredients, and ensuring that all dry products meet the company's strict food safety requirements.

* Sets and manages expectations for the director, senior management and cross functional teams.

* Oversee the commercialization of all new products from concept to post production analysis.

* Provide all processing specifications and necessary support to operations to ensure products are proven for ongoing commercial production

* Ensure that all company product requirements are met in all formulations

* Assess current formula design ("as is") and future ("should be") process effectiveness and recommend improvements

* Continuously improve existing products to ensure best performance (nutritional, palatability and stool) and cost optimization

* Identify and evaluate new technologies that enhance current products and/or create best in class new products

* Conduct efficacy research on new technologies under evaluation

* Submit scientific findings for publication (scientific abstracts, peer reviewed manuscripts)

* Present technical data to external scientific, veterinary and business audiences

* Maintain formula accuracy in formula database and provide relevant reports in order to support other departments

* Monitor raw material nutrient values to insure proper levels are used in all formula design projects

* Evaluate, recommend, and enhance all product testing methodologies and manage the execution of all product testing for new and existing formulas

* Develop, maintain, and analyze competitive feeding data

* Provide formula product support for other teams (operations, marketing, sales, etc.) as requested

* Work closely with technical and quality assurance personnel to ensure that product specifications are met and appropriate to desired product attributes

* Review product claims with marketing, legal and regulatory personnel to ensure accurate supporting data

* Perform physical and analytical lab tests on ingredients and finished products, as required.

* Ability to prepare and present results, both written and oral, to all levels of management.

* Ensure necessary documentation is maintained within the department to meet and substantiate product label compliance standards, feeding guidelines, statements of nutritional adequacy, and advertising or promotional claims

* Identify intellectual property opportunities (trade secrets or patents) to give the company a competitive advantage.

* Keep up to date with industry trends by networking with the technical community and attending meetings/conventions.

* Travel: 25-50% of time to attend test runs, plant commissioning, and team meetings in Wilton


* Expertise in formula design (including Rx diets), stability studies, palatability studies, and the establishment of ingredient and finished product specifications

* Proficient in Concept-5 and Multi Step formulation software

* Working knowledge of all dry manufacturing processes and operations, including different packaging forms, etc.

* Hands on experience in working with external partners including 3rd party co-manufacturers, suppliers, associations, etc.

* Experience with pilot plant trials

* Ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently

* Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal/ written communication

* Able to excel in fast paced business environment

* Knowledge working with and formulation of other forms of food (dry, injection molded, etc.) a plus.

* Must be able to work in an environment with free-roaming companion pets


* Pet parent preferred


* MS in nutrition or food science (or a related field) & 3+ years work experience or a PhD in nutrition or food science (or a related field) & 2+ years work experience.
